Chapter One

The Six-Cent Science Project

Leo Navarro believed in two things absolutely. He believed in the scientific method. And he believed that every problem in the universe had a solution, provided you were willing to look hard enough and long enough and not give up just because something seemed impossible. He had not yet found a problem lately, but maybe it was about a problem finding him.


The trouble started on a Monday, which, Leo had noticed, was when most troubles preferred to start. It was the first day back after winter break, and Ms. Okafor had written four words on the whiteboard in her very serious handwriting: SCIENCE FAIR — SIGN UP NOW A ripple of excitement moved through Room 14. Leo felt it too, right in the center of his chest, like a tuning fork that had been struck against something solid. The science fair. His science fair. He had been planning his project since October. He was going to build a working model of a Faraday cage — a mesh of conductive metal that blocks electromagnetic fields. He had read about them in three different books and one very long website that used vocabulary his classmates would not understand for at least four more years. He had sketched diagrams in the margins of his math notebook. He had written a list of materials that he folded and unfolded so many times it had gone soft at the creases. The list was not long. But it cost money. Specifically, it cost forty-seven dollars and twelve cents. Leo had six cents. He knew this because he had counted.


Around him, his classmates were already buzzing. Jordan Pemberton announced she was building a robotic arm, which her older brother had helped her design and which cost, according to Jordan, “not that much, maybe like two hundred dollars.” Marcus Webb said his dad was ordering a solar panel kit online. Professional grade. Even quiet Priya Mehta, who sat in the back and never talked about anything, had apparently decided to map the electromagnetic output of seventeen different household appliances using a detector she had built herself — loops of wire wound around a wooden dowel, connected to a multimeter, assembled at her kitchen table over winter break. Leo listened to all of this and said nothing. He was very good at saying nothing. He had been practicing for eleven years. He looked at his list, folded it up once more, and put it in his pocket.


That evening, Leo spread his six cents across the kitchen table and stared at them. Two of the pennies were from 1987. He was not sure this mattered, but he noted it in his notebook because a scientist notes everything, even things that seem irrelevant, because you can never be completely sure what’s irrelevant until you know what’s relevant, and you can’t know what’s relevant until you understand the whole picture, and understanding the whole picture takes time, which Leo had, and money, which he did not. His mother was in the laundry alcove off the kitchen, loading the washing machine with the practiced efficiency of someone who has done this approximately ten thousand times. Her name was Rosa, and she worked double shifts at the hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays and always came home smelling like coffee and hand sanitizer and the particular kind of tired that lives behind a person’s eyes. “Mom,” Leo said. “Mm." “I need forty-seven dollars.” The washing machine made a sound like it was clearing its throat. “For what?” his mother said, without turning around. “My science fair project.” She did turn around then. She looked at him with an expression Leo had catalogued over the years — the one that appeared whenever she had to choose between wanting and having, between the things her son needed and the things her bank account could afford. It was there in the slight tightness around her eyes, the way her shoulders didn’t quite straighten. That look. “Leo,” she said carefully. “It’s a Faraday cage,” he said. “It blocks electromagnetic—” “I know what a Faraday cage is.” She didn’t, but she also did, the way parents know things without knowing them. “Baby, we don’t have forty-seven dollars for a science project right now.” “I know.” He looked at his six cents. “I was just telling you the number.” His mother was quiet for a moment. The washing machine gurgled. Behind it, the dryer sat in its usual position, large and dented and slightly off-white, like an old refrigerator that had given up on its dreams. It was making the noise it always made — a low, grinding rumble, punctuated every forty seconds or so by a mysterious metallic clunk that Leo had never been able to explain. His mother pulled open the dryer door. She reached inside. She held up a single blue sock. And for one moment, the whole kitchen was very quiet. “I put two in this morning,” she said, mostly to herself. Leo looked at the sock. He looked at the dryer. He looked at his notebook, which was open to a blank page, waiting. His mother turned to him. There was something in her eyes — not quite a joke and not quite desperation, but something in the middle, the place where those two things live together in people who are doing their best. “You want a science project?” she said. “Figure out why socks disappear when you run them through the dryer.” She raised an eyebrow and looked over at Leo with a sideways grin. Leo smiled and looked at the dryer for a long time. “Where do the socks go,” he said slowly. Not a question. More like a scientist reading a hypothesis off a chalkboard, tasting the shape of it. “Nobody knows…” his mother said, and went back to her laundry. “I’ll know,” said Leo. “By the science fair.” His mother laughed, just a little. It was a tired laugh, but it was a real one. Leo picked up his pencil. At the top of the blank page, he wrote: PROJECT: The Disappearance of Socks in Standard Household Dryers — A Controlled Investigation Budget: $0.06 Materials: Notebook (this one). Thermometer (from medicine cabinet). Magnifying glass (from cereal box prize, 2022). Ruler. Flashlight. Brain. Status: ACTIVE.


By nine o’clock that night, Leo had turned the laundry alcove into what he privately called his Observation Station. The thermometer was taped to the wall at dryer-height. The magnifying glass was propped on the detergent shelf, angled toward the dryer’s round glass door. His notebook was balanced on an upturned laundry basket, which served as his chair, his desk, and, if he shifted his weight just right, a fairly decent footrest. He sat very still and watched the dryer spin. Clothes tumbled. The drum glowed faintly orange through the glass. Steam curled up from the vent pipe in lazy spirals. Leo wrote: 9:04 PM. Internal temperature: approximately 135°F based on exterior panel reading. Contents: six socks (three pairs, confirmed). Sound: rhythmic tumbling plus recurring metallic clunk at 40-second intervals. Possible explanations for clunk: (1) loose button, (2) small hard object caught in drum housing, (3) structural irregularity in the drum wall. Investigate. He paused. Added: (4) Unknown. A scientist, he believed, should always leave room for the unknown. He just had absolutely no idea how much unknown there was.


Chapter Two

The Lint Trap Ambush

The first three nights, nothing happened. Leo documented this carefully. Night 1 — Tuesday. Observation period: 8:47 PM to 10:15 PM. Dryer contents: two towels, one pair of jeans, miscellaneous socks (four). Result: all socks present and accounted for at cycle’s end. Anomalies: none. Conclusion: insufficient data. Continue observation. Night 2 — Wednesday. Observation period: 9:02 PM to 10:44 PM. Dryer contents: assorted laundry including seven socks. Result: six socks recovered. One missing (white, ankle-height, faded gray at toe). Anomalies: metallic clunk at 9:38 PM and again at 10:11 PM — louder than previous measurements. Conclusion: pattern emerging. Continue observation. Night 3 — Thursday. Observation period: 8:55 PM to the point at which Leo fell asleep on the laundry basket and woke up at 1 AM with a ruler imprint on his cheek. Result: unknown. Conclusion: upgrade observation strategy. Set alarm.


On the fourth night, Leo set his alarm for 11:45 PM. He had done the math. The missing socks always vanished from loads that ran late. His mother did laundry every few days, and the disappearances — he had gone back through his memory and catalogued them as best he could — almost always happened when the dryer had been running past eleven. Not always. But often enough to be a pattern, and patterns, Leo believed, were the universe’s way of leaving notes for people who were paying attention. He put on his thickest socks (ironic, he noted), tucked his notebook under his arm, grabbed the flashlight from the junk drawer, and padded down the hallway in the dark. The house was very quiet at midnight. The refrigerator hummed. A car passed outside, sweeping pale light across the ceiling and across the closed door of the back bedroom, which had been quiet like this for three years now. Leo settled onto his laundry basket. He pointed his flashlight at the dryer. He waited.


The dryer, for its part, did not seem to care that it was being watched. It rumbled along at its usual volume — which was considerable, roughly equivalent to a lawnmower attempting to eat a smaller lawnmower — and the clothes inside tumbled in their slow, hypnotic loop. Round and round. A blue shirt. A pillowcase. The leg of a pair of jeans. Round and round. Leo watched. He wrote: Night 4 — Friday. 11:52 PM. Dryer contents: standard mixed load, confirmed six socks (two red tube socks, two white ankle socks, two gray athletic socks). Temperature holding steady. No anomalies. Watching. He kept watching. 12:04 AM. 12:19 AM. His eyes were starting to feel like they had sand in them. He pressed his knuckles against them and blinked. A scientist, he reminded himself, does not sleep on the job. A scientist maintains observation until the data presents itself. 12:31 AM. The dryer made the clunk. Leo sat up straight. It was louder than usual. Not just louder — different. The other clunks had been mechanical sounds, the sound of something hitting something. This one had a lower note to it, almost like a thud, like something with weight had landed inside the drum. Leo leaned forward. The clothes kept tumbling. Blue shirt. Pillowcase. Jeans leg. Red sock. Pillowcase. Blue shirt— He stopped. He pressed his nose nearly to the glass. The clothes were slowing down. Not the way they slowed down at the end of a cycle, gradually winding to a stop. This was different. This was the way a film slows down when someone has pressed a button, each frame stretching out, the clothes moving through the hot air like they were moving through something thicker. Like honey. Like air had become liquid. And then they stopped altogether. They hung there, suspended in the drum — the blue shirt spread flat in mid-air, the jeans leg dangling, the pillowcase puffed up like a small cloud — perfectly still, as though someone had pressed pause on the entire world. Leo did not breathe. In the back wall of the dryer, where the metal met the exhaust housing, a light appeared. It was small at first. The size of a coin. Neon purple, bright and crackling, the color of something that was not supposed to exist in a laundry alcove in a small house on Cortland Street. It pulsed once, twice, and then it opened — blooming outward like a tiny flower made of electricity, its edges spinning, casting sharp purple shadows up the walls and across Leo’s face. A portal. A small, glowing, neon-purple portal. In the back of his family’s dryer. Leo’s brain did several things at once. One part of it said: this is impossible. Another part said: write this down. A third part — the deepest, most scientific part — said: you knew something was wrong with that clunk. You documented it. This is what documentation is for. He picked up his pencil. He wrote: 12:33 AM — portal. Then a hand came through it. Not a human hand. A small hand, round and slightly furry, with stubby fingers that moved with the practiced efficiency of someone who has done this particular thing many, many times before. It reached out of the portal, felt around briefly among the suspended clothing, and then — with the casual confidence of a person taking an apple from a fruit bowl they pass every single morning — it closed around one of the red tube socks. And began to pull. Leo moved. He was not sure he had decided to move. His body simply stopped being still and started being in motion, which was not something that usually happened to Leo, who was by nature a planner and a thinker and a person who preferred to observe before acting. But something about watching a small furry hand steal his family’s sock in the middle of the night bypassed every careful, methodical instinct he possessed and went straight to a part of his brain that simply said: no. He grabbed the colander. He had positioned it on the shelf three days ago, after thinking carefully about the geometry of the dryer and the location of the lint trap and the most likely entry point for anything coming in or out of the drum’s back panel. He had put it there the way a chess player positions a piece four moves before the moment they need it. He yanked the dryer door open. A wall of hot air hit him in the face. The clothes, released from whatever had been holding them, dropped limply into a pile. The purple light blazed, brighter now, filling the whole drum. Leo reached past the warm laundry. He slammed the colander down over the lint trap. There was a sound — a very small, very indignant sound, somewhere between a squeak and a word he probably wasn’t supposed to repeat — and then silence. Leo held the colander in place and looked. Pressed against the mesh, eyes wide with outrage, was a creature roughly the size of a large potato. He was round in the way that suggested a life of sitting at a desk, with a broad flat nose and ears that stuck out at sensible right angles and eyebrows so thick and expressive they appeared to have opinions of their own. He was wearing a bright orange reflective safety vest over what appeared to be a very small set of medieval wizard robes, and he had a miniature clipboard tucked under one arm. In his other hand, held triumphantly even now, was the red tube sock. He looked up at Leo. Leo looked down at him. For a moment, the only sound was the dryer’s heating element ticking as it cooled. The creature smoothed the front of his safety vest with the hand that was holding the clipboard. He looked at Leo with the expression of a person who has been caught doing something they absolutely were doing but would very much prefer to discuss calmly. “Alright,” he said. His voice was small but carried extremely well, like a radio turned to a reasonable volume in a quiet room. “Let’s not make this weird.” Leo stared at him. “I,” he said. “Yeah,” said the creature. “You were— there was a— you—” Leo pointed at the portal, which had shrunk back to the size of a coin and was pulsing quietly. “Portal, yes, I know, very impressive, listen—” The creature glanced at his clipboard. “I’m actually on a schedule here, so if you could just—” “You took our sock,” said Leo. The creature looked at the sock in his hand. He looked at Leo. He looked at the sock again. “I’m going to need you to define took,” he said. Leo pressed the colander down a little harder. The creature made the face of someone who has just realized this particular conversation is going to take significantly longer than planned. He set his clipboard down on the dryer floor. He sat down on it, crossed his small legs, and looked up at Leo with the resigned expression of a person who has missed their train. “Fine,” he said. “You’ve got questions.” “Approximately forty-seven,” said Leo. “Of course you do,” said the creature.


Chapter Three

Barnaby and the Under-Grid

“Your name,” said Leo, pencil ready. The creature sighed the sigh of someone who has been through a very long onboarding process many times before. “Barnaby,” he said. “Level-Three Retrieval Operator, Section Four-B, Northern Residential Corridor.” He paused. “Don’t write all that down.” Leo wrote all of it down. Barnaby watched him do it. His thick eyebrows descended toward each other like two caterpillars preparing for a disagreement. “What is the colander for, specifically?” he said. “Because I want you to know, I could leave if I wanted to. The portal is right there. I’m choosing to stay and have this conversation.” “The colander is so you can’t reach the portal,” said Leo. “I’m aware of what the colander is doing. I’m questioning its necessity.” “You were stealing our sock.” “Retrieving,” said Barnaby. He held up the red tube sock with great dignity. “There is a significant difference, legally speaking, and I would appreciate it if you used the correct terminology.” Leo looked at him. Leo looked at his notebook. Leo wrote: retrieving (his word — investigate). Barnaby made a small strangled sound.


“Alright,” he said, after a moment. “Here’s what’s going to happen. You’re going to lift the colander. I’m going to go back through the portal. You’re going to go to bed. Tomorrow you’re going to wake up and you’re going to tell yourself you had a very vivid dream. Everyone does, by the way. Much more common than you’d think. You won’t be the first, you won’t be the last, it’s a whole—” “What’s on the other side of the portal?” said Leo. Barnaby stopped. “I’m sorry?” “The portal. Where does it go?” “That’s not — you don’t need to—” Barnaby pressed his clipboard against his chest. “That is genuinely none of your business.” “Why do you need our socks?” “I don’t need them, I retrieve them, there’s a—” “Where do they go after you retrieve them?” “That is also none of—” “Why is it none of my business?” Leo leaned closer to the colander. “They’re our socks.” Barnaby looked at him for a long, measuring moment. Then he looked at his clipboard. Then he looked at the portal, which was still pulsing its quiet purple pulse, patient as a heartbeat. He rubbed the bridge of his broad flat nose. “How old are you?” he said. “Eleven.” “Do you know what would happen if I told an eleven-year-old human how the world actually works?” “You’d be answering a direct question from someone who caught you fair and square,” said Leo. Barnaby stared at him. “I like you,” he said, in a tone that suggested he found this deeply inconvenient. “I don’t want to like you. I’m on the clock. But I like you.” He sat back down on his clipboard. “Fine. Short version. And then you lift the colander.” “I’ll consider it,” said Leo. “Consider it,” Barnaby muttered. “Eleven years old. Unbelievable.”


He took a breath. “You know electricity?” he said. “Yes.” “No, you don’t. Nobody does. That’s the point.” Barnaby tapped his clipboard with one stubby finger. “What you call electricity — what your whole civilization calls electricity — is just the part of the system you can see. The wires. The outlets. The little diagrams in the textbooks. That’s the surface layer. You put your copper in the ground and your switches on the walls and you said, look, we figured out the universe, and the whole time—” He shook his head slowly, with the expression of someone watching a child proudly display a drawing of a horse that looks nothing like a horse. “The whole time, you were just describing the outside wrapper of something you had no idea was underneath.” Leo’s pencil had not stopped moving. “Under every power line, under every wire buried in your walls, there’s something older,” Barnaby continued. “A pipeline network — magical, pneumatic, and ancient beyond your counting. It runs beneath every city, every house, every appliance you’ve ever plugged into a wall. It’s been running since your ancestors were still figuring out which end of a stick to hold.” He sat forward. “Your electricity doesn’t power your technology. Our grid powers your technology. Your wires are just the decoration on top. The performance. The thing you see so you’ll stop looking deeper.” Leo stared at him. “That’s—” he started. “Enormous, yes, I know, take a moment.” “But what powers your grid?” Barnaby pointed at the sock. Leo looked at the sock. He looked at Barnaby. He looked at the sock again. “A sock,” he said flatly. “Not just a sock.” Barnaby leaned forward. His thick eyebrows were serious now, almost gentle. “A lost sock. There’s a difference. All the items in your world that go missing — the socks out of dryers, the coins that fall between sofa cushions, the toy that rolls under the bed and disappears forever — they all carry something with them when they’re lost. You know what that is?” Leo shook his head slowly. “The feeling,” said Barnaby, simply. “The feeling of losing something. That moment when you realize it’s gone and there’s nothing you can do about it. That feeling is energy. Concentrated, high-friction, entirely renewable energy.” He settled back. “Your species loses things constantly and feels terrible about it, and that feeling is what keeps every light on, every engine running, and every dryer turning on this planet. It has been since approximately the fourteenth century. You’ve been powering our whole operation without knowing it, and we’ve been keeping your civilization running without you knowing that either.” He spread his hands. “Everybody wins.” Leo’s pencil had stopped. He was staring at the dryer wall. “The emotional energy of loss,” he said quietly. Like he was reading something off the inside of his own skull. “Very catchy when you put it that way, yes.” “That’s why it matters when a sock goes missing.” Leo looked up. “Not just because it’s inconvenient. It actually does something.” “Every time,” said Barnaby. “Your mother losing that blue sock every other Tuesday?” He gestured vaguely at the kitchen. “Keeping the streetlights on for half the block.” Leo thought about his mother holding up that lone blue sock in the light. He thought about her tired eyes. He thought about every small thing their family had ever lost and how much each one had mattered. He did not write anything down.


From outside, there was a sound. Both of them turned toward the kitchen window. The streetlight at the end of the driveway, which normally held steady through all weather and all hours, was flickering. Not a power-cut flicker — more like a disco ball, flashing rhythmically, neon purple at the edges. “Ah,” said Barnaby. “What is that?” “That,” said Barnaby, “is what happens when a Retrieval Operator misses his window.” He gave Leo a very pointed look. “Every stop on my route has a scheduled pickup time. When I don’t make the pickup — because someone has trapped me under a colander — the local grid loses pressure. The magic that should have moved through my section of pipeline has nowhere to go. It backs up. It starts doing things it shouldn’t.” He straightened his safety vest. “This is why I told you I was on the clock.” From the kitchen came a sound neither of them had expected. It was the toaster. Their toaster — a battered two-slice model with a broken setting dial that had been stuck on medium-dark for three years — was speaking. In a clear, resonant, almost theatrical voice. “To be, or not to be,” it announced, to the empty kitchen. “That is the question.” Leo turned to Barnaby. Barnaby had the look of a professional who has seen this happen before but finds it no less irritating for that. “Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer—” “The appliances,” said Barnaby, “get confused when the grid backs up. They start pulling from whatever magical frequency is available. Apparently yours is currently tuned to—” He tilted his head and listened. “Elizabethan theater. Could be worse. Last time I was late on a route, someone’s vacuum cleaner recited forty minutes of maritime law.” Leo looked at the toaster. He looked at Barnaby. “How long does it last?” he said. “Until I complete my pickup,” said Barnaby meaningfully, “and return to the pipeline, and things go back to normal. Which I cannot do—” He looked pointedly up at the colander. “—until someone exercises some basic hospitality.” “The slings and arrows,” said the toaster, “of outrageous fortune—” Leo looked at his notebook, which now contained more scientifically significant information than any sixth-grade project in the history of education. He looked at Barnaby. “I have thirty-nine more questions,” he said. Barnaby closed his eyes. “I know,” he said. “I know you do.”


Chapter Four

The Department of Missing Things

The toaster had moved on to Act Three. The refrigerator was humming in a key it had never hummed in before, a low, resonant drone that made the magnets on its door vibrate. The kitchen clock, which ran on a battery and had no business behaving unusually at all, was spinning its minute hand counterclockwise at twice normal speed. And somewhere in the living room, Leo’s father’s recliner — the old brown one with the footrest that stuck — had begun, slowly and with great mechanical dignity, opening and closing its footrest on its own. Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. His mother slept through all of it in the back bedroom, exhausted from her shift, the light under her door dark. Some people, Leo had noticed, could sleep through almost anything. “This is getting worse,” said Leo. “Yes,” said Barnaby. “How much worse does it get?” “Last major backup I heard about, a family’s dishwasher filed a formal noise complaint with the city.” Barnaby tugged at the colander experimentally. “Their garage door opened and closed for eleven hours. Their television got very interested in philosophy.” He paused. “Also there was some light structural damage, but that was an unusual case.” “Hath not a proud man eyes?” announced the toaster. “That’s not even the right play anymore,” Leo said. “They mix them up when the pressure gets high enough.” Barnaby tugged at the colander again. “I am going to say this one more time, with great sincerity — let me go. I will answer three more questions first. Reasonable questions. Not forty-seven questions.” “I’ve narrowed it to thirty-one.” “I—” Barnaby pinched the bridge of his nose. “You are going to be a remarkable adult and I mean that in the most exhausting possible way—” The closet door blew open.


Not slowly. Not with a creak. It blew open the way a door opens when something very deliberate is on the other side of it, with a sound like a book being shut firmly, and a brief flash of blue-white light that strobed across the laundry alcove and made Leo’s shadow jump three feet up the wall. Standing in the doorway — where, until four seconds ago, there had been nothing but his mother’s winter coats and a broken ironing board — was a man. He was tall and thin in the way that some people are thin as a matter of personal philosophy, as if he had decided at some point that he simply didn’t have time for extra width. He wore a tweed suit of such precise tailoring it looked like it had been fitted to him at birth. His silver hair was swept back from a long, angular face with a small white pocket square tucked into his breast pocket with architectural exactness. He was carrying an umbrella. The umbrella was closed, which made no sense in a laundry room at midnight, and it crackled faintly with blue static electricity along its entire length, which made even less sense anywhere. He looked at the dryer. He looked at the portal. He looked at Barnaby under the colander. He looked, finally, at Leo — an eleven-year-old boy in thick socks and pajamas, sitting on an upturned laundry basket, holding a flashlight in one hand and a pencil in the other. Something shifted in his face. It started at the corners of his eyes and moved downward into a slow, wide, genuinely delighted smile. “Extraordinary,” he said. His voice was like a cello being played in a large, carpeted room. “You,” he said, pointing at Leo with the tip of the crackling umbrella, “are the one who tracked the route.” Leo looked at Barnaby. Barnaby shrugged, as much as someone his size could shrug. “Grid went dark. He would have noticed eventually regardless.” “I didn’t track a route,” said Leo. “I was doing a science project.” “Yes!” The tall man stepped fully into the laundry room, which immediately felt smaller. “Yes, that’s precisely what’s extraordinary. You weren’t looking for us. You were looking for a pattern. And patterns, as you have apparently already understood at the age of—” He paused. “Eleven,” said Leo. “Eleven. As you’ve already understood at eleven, are where the truth lives.” He extended one long hand. “Agent Reginald Kensington. Department of Missing Things, Northern Division, Special Operations. And you are?” “Leo Navarro.” “Leo.” Kensington shook his hand with great seriousness, as though they were signing a treaty. “Leo, I have been doing this job for a very long time, and in that time exactly three humans have independently identified a retrieval route using non-magical means.” He held up three fingers. “One was Isaac Newton, who immediately decided it was gravity and wrote that down instead. One was a nine-year-old girl in Edinburgh in 1987 who we had to move quite quickly on. And now you.” He closed his hand. “I cannot tell you what a genuine pleasure it is.” “You’re not going to arrest him?” said Barnaby, with some disappointment. “Arrest him? I want to offer him a tour.” Barnaby made the face of a person discovering that the universe is profoundly unfair.


“The closet,” said Kensington, gesturing back through the door he’d arrived from. “After you.” Leo looked at the open doorway. The coats were still there — his mother’s green wool one, his father’s old work jacket, kept on its hook long after everything else had been sorted through — but beyond them, where the back wall of the closet should have been, was the same blue-white glow that had come in with Kensington. “Barnaby,” said Leo. “Don’t look at me,” said Barnaby, from under the colander. “You should come.” A pause. “I’m not coming,” said Barnaby. “This isn’t a field trip. I have a route. I have a schedule. I have—” He looked at his clipboard. He looked at the portal. And it was spreading, crawling up the glass from the base, and inside it, barely visible, something was moving. Something large.


It did not look like anything Leo had words for, which was an unusual problem for him because he generally had words for things. It was roughly the shape of a storm cloud if a storm cloud had decided to become three-dimensional and personal about it. It shifted constantly, its edges fraying and reforming, taller in one moment and wider in the next, as though it could not quite decide what shape was most threatening and was trying several simultaneously. It was gray — not one gray but every gray, from the pale gray of old ash to the deep charcoal gray of something burnt a long time ago — and it moved the way smoke moves when there is no wind, slowly and with a horrible sense of intention. Its eyes — if they were eyes, and Leo’s brain filed this under working assumption — were two points of blue-white light somewhere near the center of its mass, angry and cold and ancient in a way that had nothing to do with age in years and everything to do with age in waiting. About an hour ago.” “Section Four-B feeds the northwest containment seal.” “Yes.” “Without that feed, the seal would have weakened in approximately—” “Forty-five minutes,” said Barnaby. “Give or take.” Kensington closed his eyes briefly. “I was trapped under a colander,” said Barnaby, with some dignity.


Below them, a team of Department agents had assembled at the base of the Main Vault. Leo counted twelve of them, small from this height, each one carrying what appeared to be a long copper rod with a glowing tip — somewhere between a conductor’s baton and a lightning rod, crackling with the same blue energy as Kensington’s umbrella. “They’re going to try to push it back,” said Kensington. “Standard dispersal procedure.” “Will that work?” said Leo. Kensington’s jaw tightened. “Watch,” he said. The agents fired in unison.
