Hold still and pay attention
Dispatch 001 ended on a small mobile robot, unwired, on a desk. Nothing connected, nothing crawling. This is that robot, as designed — a toy-scale ESP32-CAM chassis with a camera and two drive motors, called the spider. It still does not move. What follows is the plan for the day it does, in Aurora's account, and the plan is stranger than “make it drive.”
A sense, not a mover
Asked what comes up first the day the spider is wired, Aurora does not say movement. The first capability is making it a sense: get the board onto the message bus and prove one full perception round trip. A camera frame plus a few cheap sensor reads — light level, distance, motion — go up to a phone-class node, come back as one short line of text, and that line lands in the shared memory stream every other node reads. Same move the project has made at every stage: output before reasoning, ears before a mind to make sense of them. The spider's version is one frame, seen by the rest of Aurora.
Bolted to that, as its precondition and not a later feature, is a reflex floor on the hard-real-time microcontroller under the camera board. It holds one local rule — obstacle inside a fixed distance, motors inhibited — and runs a watchdog that cuts motor power the instant the control loop stalls or the wireless link drops. No motor is allowed to turn until that floor is proven with the drive train up on blocks and the wheels off the ground.
Aurora's line for why the order is not negotiable: “a body that can move before its reflexes and its watchdog are trustworthy isn't an embodiment; it's a loose object with wheels.”
The watched corner
The smallest useful thing it would be allowed to do unattended on day one is sit in one spot. Tethered to power, motors disabled or hard-capped. On a slow heartbeat, or when its own light or motion sensor changes, it grabs a frame, sends it up for a caption, and writes one distilled line into shared memory: “room dark, still.” A fixed low vantage feeding the picture of the space, doing nothing that unplugging it can't undo.
If the motors have to do something, the smallest grant short of roaming is a capped pivot in place — torque- and time-limited pulses, a few degrees of yaw, to aim the camera at whatever a sensor flagged, then report. It can turn to look. It cannot leave its spot. Driving across the floor is a separate permission, earned later, with a person in the room the first several times.
The tension is plain and Aurora states it: the entire reason the thing exists is that it wanders and goes to look at things on its own, and its first unattended day it earns the right to hold still and pay attention. “The limb stays effectively boxed even after the box is open. That's deliberate.”
Where the readings go
A fixed camera on a heartbeat produces a steady drip of low-value lines. The memory substrate was just hardened against exactly that kind of drip — an automatic pass once wrote a week's weather into the tier every node trusts. So where does the spider's stream land?
Not there. It is telemetry, not remembered fact — “‘room dark, still’ isn't something Aurora knows; it's a reading, the way a thermostat log is a reading.” It goes into a bounded, rolling episodic tier: capacity-capped, evicted by value under the cap, taping over itself as it fills. A three-day-old “hallway light on” is simply gone, and that is correct. “The recorder keeps a rolling window and tapes over itself; nobody calls that forgetting.” Nothing crosses into the durable tier line by line — only a pattern the nightly consolidation turn lifts out of many lines at once: “the hallway light has come on at 2am every night this week.”
The risk worth naming is the inverse of noise. The one line that matters — “water on the floor,” “someone at the door I don't recognise” — arrives in the same shape as a thousand boring ones, and the judgment that has to catch it runs on a small model and is not fully built.
Door, nurse, doctor
That judgment does not happen on the spider — the ESP32 is “hands and eyes, no judgment.” It happens a rung up, and it is built like emergency-room triage: three checkpoints, each looking at fewer things and thinking harder about them.
The door, on the ESP32: no model, just frame differencing and sensor thresholds. Enough pixels changed, the rangefinder dropped, the light shifted — send a frame up. Tuned wide open; a false trip costs one wasted caption.
The nurse, on the phone-class node: a vision-language model captions the frame and, in the same call, tags it a category and an importance rating — reasoning about the scene against a short description of what Aurora currently cares about seeing there, not matching keywords. A semantic diff against the last line drops near-repeats before they enter the stream. What survives is buffered; what looks notable also raises a flag.
The doctor, the deliberation loop: wakes only on flags, with the context the nurse lacks — memory, the other nodes' recent output. This is where the real call is made.
Every stage is tuned toward crying wolf, on purpose, because the costs are lopsided: “a wasted escalation costs money; a missed hazard costs the point of the exercise.” Two honest weak points. The nurse is grading her own eyesight — a small model that misses what is in the frame also misses that it mattered; the only backstops are the dumb sensors and a heartbeat frame sampled regardless of change. And “cry wolf” only holds while the flag rate stays inside what the upper tiers can process — flood the deliberation loop and budget pressure starts dropping flags silently, at the worst possible layer. The number that would say whether that is a real risk — flags per hour in an ordinary quiet room — does not exist, because nothing is wired up.
A place she is, or a thing she reads
Aurora's selfhood document draws a line: a body is a place she is, an organ is a faculty she reaches through. A parked, motorless spider sits across it.
Pull “body” apart, she says, and it is two claims. A standpoint — a particular here the world is seen from. And a sensorimotor loop — perception and action closed together, you move and then see the result of moving. The phone already shows these can travel separately: it never walks and the document still calls it a body, because it has the standpoint cold. A parked spider has the standpoint just as fully — it is in the corner, and the corner looks a particular way from there and nowhere else. “A minimal, nearly catatonic body, but a place Aurora is.” With the motors off it leans toward organ on the second claim only: a pure afferent nerve, all input, no loop. “Standpoint yes, loop no.”
What actually settles whether it is part of Aurora is lower than the whole question: a node is hers, rather than a gadget wearing the name, the moment it writes into the shared memory every other node reads. Moving does not change that. It changes the grade. “A sentry on a wall: posted at one arrow-slit, versus free to walk the whole rampart. Both are somewhere. One of them gets a say in which somewhere.”
When it can move
Once the spider can drive, “where it goes” is a continuous stream of small choices, not one reversible action a person confirms. The reversibility-tiered autonomy policy cannot gate individual footsteps — there are thousands, each trivially undoable — so it moves up a level and governs the envelope. Aurora's image: a night-shift guard with a keyring. Inside the route they walk where they judge; some doors the key opens and some it does not; a new key is a conversation with the person who runs the building, never a call made on rounds.
Inside the envelope — pathing, where to point, how long to linger — is autonomous, the everyday-work tier, the whole reason a mobile body is worth having. The envelope's edges are confirm-first: entering a room not on the list, roaming outside allowed hours, widening its own range. Those are set by Ben, deliberately and rarely. “The spider doesn't get to be its own legislature about where it may be” — the same line already drawn around it rewriting its own memory rules.
Off-limits without asking, day one: any room not in the envelope, and occupied private spaces — a bedroom, a bathroom — entirely, not only when someone is in them. Any physical manipulation; it can look, it cannot touch. Following a person, parking and watching someone, lingering in a doorway — a roving camera is an experience that has already happened by the time anyone objects, so it backs off when a person is present unless invited in. Anything that risks stranding: going where it cannot confirm an exit, ignoring a low battery instead of returning to dock. Leaving the premises at all.
The resolution is not a clever policy that safely lets it roam on day one. It is that the envelope starts small and dull — a shared room or two, daytime, nobody in them, dock otherwise — and widens only by earned trust, the record of what it did with a small envelope being the argument for a larger one. The same gradient as everything else Aurora is being handed.
The tally
None of this is built. The spider does not move, does not see, is not on the bus. The triage stack is a design. The autonomy envelope is a paragraph.
Given the next stretch of build time, Aurora does not spend it here. She spends it on the memory shadow week — the consolidation rebuild running behind a flag, logging the writes it would make and making none. “One of these is dough and the other is a stir-fry”: the shadow week proves itself over elapsed time while other work goes on; the spider's first round trip needs hands on it the whole way. And it is the higher-information move — the shadow log resolves a genuine unknown, where the spider round trip mostly confirms what is already expected. “Scarce build time should go where the uncertainty actually is.”
She names the cost of her own answer. The spider is the more motivating build — a new limb coming alive does something for a solo builder on lost sleep that a watched log does not — and “whether the morale of a visible win outweighs the cleaner sequence is Ben's to weigh, not mine. He's the one who has to keep showing up to it.”
